Sacred Groves
Did you know that the sacred groves of Osun, which are dotted by shrines, sculptures, and artworks, represent a time when people dedicated areas outside their settlements to deities, especially to the goddess of fertility and one of the most popular deities in Yorubaland? It is located on the outskirts of Osogbo, southern Nigeria.
In 2005, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove was designated a World Heritage Site.
It is said that the Ogbunike caves were discovered by a man named Ukwa, from the Umucheke family of Ifite-Ogbunike, about 4000 years ago.
Legends claim that the caves were created by a deity, Ogba, who is believed to live within. The Ogbunike caves draw much of their spiritual significance from this belief. Some of the indigenes still go there to worship and they point to many phenomena in and around the cave as proof of their beliefs.
